  • Owners must register the vehicle in the local County Treasurer’s Office in which the vehicle is garaged. (Military and full-time college students may register at either their legal residence or where they are stationed.) Renewal can be done from the previous year’s registration, the current renewal notice, or the license plate number. Proof of current Kansas liability insurance is required for each vehicle. Special plates may require an additional form. Such as disabled plates require a recertification form every three years.

If the weight of the trailer and the load combined is less than 2,000 pounds, registration is optional. Our office recommends tagging and titling on initial purchase for proof of ownership. If a farm trailer hauling the farmer's own product has a load of less than 6,000 pounds, registration is optional. For fees on trucks with gross weight of over 16,000 pounds, call the County Treasurer's Office at 620-672-4116. b. Property tax is paid at the time of registration/title application and is determined in the County Treasurer's Office. The exceptions are heavy trucks, trailers, and mopeds, whose taxes are determined by the County Appraiser's Office. c. Reflectorized plate fee is $0.50. d. Sales tax will be collected in the tag office if the vehicle is bought from an individual, purchased out of state or the sales tax paid to a dealer was less than 8.05%. The sales tax rate is 8.05% plus a $0.50 collection fee. e. The fee to transfer a tag is $20.50 plus the difference in the property tax. f. Lien holder fee is $1.50.   • Application for a title must originate in the office of the local County Treasurer.The local County Treasurer is determined by where the vehicle is garaged. Military or full-time college students may register at their legal residence or their stationed address. A vehicle must be registered within 30 days from date of purchase. Documents required are: 1. Properly assigned Statement of Origin (notarization is no longer required in KS.) 2. Kansas sales tax receipt is required when purchased from a Kansas dealer and an invoice when purchased from an out-of-state dealer. 3. Kansas liability proof of active insurance 4. Driver's License 5. Transfer of Death (TOD) party’s name and address if desired on title. The State of Kansas now holds, in electronic format, any title that has a lien attached until the lien is paid off. Transfer of License Plates The new vehicle must be registered in the same name as the old vehicle. Names allowed to be added are: parents, spouse and legal age child. Any other name being added requires the purchase of new plates; old plates may be surrendered to the local County Treasurer for a refund. A refund is determined by the remaining full months of a registration, only on the property tax and totaling more than $5. Should you have questions concerning a refund, call your local County Treasurer. The original vehicle must be disposed of and the registration or license plate number from said vehicle must be presented. Also required is the name of the purchaser of the original vehicle.

A Motor Vehicle Examination (MVE-1) on out-of-state titles from the police department or Kansas Highway Patrol. The Pratt Law Enforcement Center is located at 303 S Oak. The following are required for the MVE-1 examination: a. The vehicle b. Title (or faxed copy-certified from the Treasurer’s Office). c. The owner’s driver’s license. d. $20 cash 6. Kansas liability proof of active insurance 7. Transfer of Death (TOD) party’s name and address if desired on title. 8. Lien release if lien shows on the seller’s title (notarization is no longer required in KS).   • Sale of a vehicle: You may apply for a refund upon the sale of a vehicle. The refund is prorated from the date the plate is surrendered until the expiration date of the plate. On trucks registered over 12M lbs, the refund is mailed from the state within eight weeks. Owners with heavy trucks and trailers must also notify the appraiser’s office (620) 672-4112 to have the vehicle removed from the tax role. Trailer and moped plates are non- refundable. To apply for a refund, surrender the license plate, purchaser’s name, your social security number, and current registration. Moving out of state: You may apply for a refund when you move and register your vehicle in another state. Mail to us the Kansas license plate, Kansas registration, a copy of your new out of state driver’s license, and application for refund form. The prorated refund is on the personal property tax from the date we receive the plate, and related paperwork, to the expiration date. Refunds are not allowed on Trailers (RV trailers are allowed) and moped plates. You will want to call the Appraiser’s office to have them remove the vehicle from the tax role. Personal property is due on trailers, if owned on January 1, for the entire year.

  • In order to apply for a placard, obtain a Handicap/Disabled form and take it to your doctor for completion. Return the signed application to the Treasurer’s Office. There is no fee for this service. Applicants may receive two placards.

  • Contact the Police Department to report the lost/stolen plate. The registered owner will need to present proper identification (driver’s license), current proof of insurance, and either the registration, title, or plate number which was lost/stolen to their local Treasurer’s Office. The replacement fee is $3.00.

  • Boats are registered through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. Boat trailers are registered through the Treasurer's office.

  • When vehicles are 35 years old, they can be changed to antique. Bring in the title, insurance and current mileage and the vehicle can be changed. The charge for this process is $59.50, and the property tax and tags are $17 per year after. Billings for antiques are sent out in late November or early December. They are due by the last day in February.

  • Tag renewals are good for a full year. Tags for vehicles bought new within the year will be good for the period between the purchase date and the expiration date; in some cases this will be for just a partial year. Tags are prorated from the month the title is signed over until the month your tag comes due, which is determined by your last name.
